FME Version

Introduction

Based on factors both internally at Safe and externally within the software industry, FME 2021.2 will be the last release to be distributed with support for both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows architectures. Starting with FME 2022, FME will support 64-bit Windows only.

Please note that Safe Software's technical support for FME 2021.2 will end in August 2025. This means that 32-bit versions of FME will no longer be supported. To continue to receive technical support for FME, please upgrade your operating systems to 64-bit and download a newer version.

We know this is an impactful change and want to ensure that you are aware and can plan accordingly. After reading this article, if you still have any questions or concerns, please contact our support team.

Impacted Products

FME Server

For FME Server 2022 and newer, FME Server for Windows will support 64-bit only. FME Server 2021.2.x will be the last release to support 32-bit Windows (including 32-bit FME Engines).

FME Desktop

For FME Desktop 2022 and newer, FME Desktop for Windows will support 64-bit only. FME Desktop 2021.2.x will be the last release to support 32-bit Windows.

We are aware that there are many formats that require 32-bit architecture to be used; however, we have found that in almost every case, there is a 64-bit option available.

Notable formats

Format Recommended Action/Replacement
Esri Formats Personal Geodatabase: recommend migrating to File Geodatabase if possible, else there is an updated reader format for Personal Geodatabase in FME 2022.0 and newer

All other Esri formats dependent on an Esri application (including File Geodatabase and Enterprise Geodatabase): recommend installing ArcGIS Pro (64-bit), ArcGIS for Server, or Esri's ArcGIS for Desktop 64-bit Background Geoprocessing
Microsoft Access Microsoft Access (MDB_ADO) supported on 64-bit
Microsoft Access (JDBC - MSACCES_JDBC_2) supported on 64-bit, Linux, and macOS
Intergraph GeoMedia Access Warehouse Within the workspace, replace the Geomedia Access Warehouse format with the Geopackage format, and set up a Geopackage connector type in Geomedia.
Teradata Spatial Replaced by Teradata Spatial (JDBC) (Shortname: TERADATA_JDBC_SPATIAL)

Python 2.7

Python 2.7 will not be shipped with FME 2022.0 as part of the 32-bit Windows deprecation. For more information, please see the Python 2.7 Deprecation article.

Partner Applications

Many of our partner applications that bundle FME (e.g. AutoCAD Map 3D, MapInfo Professional) have already dropped support for 32-bit Windows or are working towards this goal. We will work closely with all our partners to support the transition to 64-bit.

Third-Party Plug-Ins

All third-party developers will need to port plug-ins to 64-bit. Please see the instructions in the Porting a 32-bit plug-in to the 64-bit article.
