Question

What happens when I open an existing workspace in a newer version of FME Workbench?

Answer

As newer versions of FME Workbench become available you'll eventually find yourself opening an existing workspace in a newer version of FME then it was created in. As we upgrade and enhance FME there is a good chance you won't be able to open this upgraded workspace in an older version of FME.

When a old workspace is opened in a new version of FME Workbench we just open it. It is when saving the workspace after some changes that we will prompt the user.

We attempt to warn the user with prompts within the application when a workspace that was created in an older version of FME Workbench is being saved after some changes are made in the new FME Workspace version.

You will see a message like this:
"Saved workspace may not open in older version of FME Workbench". This prompt will also give you an option to save the file with a backup or just overwrite the exist file.

Customers should assume there are ALWAYS bigger changes happening when opening an older workspace in a newer version. Ensure you make backups of your older workspaces before trying to open in the new version of FME Workbench is another way to keep the older version of the file.
