Installing FME changed the file associations of my Mapinfo/Autocad/Microstation etc files

Symptom

I installed FME and now the Windows file associations for the files associated with my GIS applications have all been set to point to FME Workbench.
 

Cause

During the FME installation phase one of the questions is "Do you want to associate FME Desktop with the supported file formats". When selecting this option ALL supported file formats are associated with FME. This includes Mapinfo, Autocad, Microstation etc files.
 

Resolution

Here are instructions for resetting the File Associations back to the original GIS application.

For Windows 7

Use Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs > Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
