Importing an fsproject File Requires an Admin to Grant Permissions to the Project

Considerations

A user imports a project into FME Flow but cannot view or modify the project or its contents. This commonly occurs when the user did not create the project and does not have sufficient permissions.

Why This Happens

FME Flow applies permission rules to both projects and the items within them. When a non-admin user (without the fmeadmin or fmesuperuser role) imports a project created by another user, they are not automatically granted access to it. Items such as automations, topics, and apps require separate sharing, even after the project itself is shared.

How to Resolve It

To grant access, an FME Flow admin must explicitly share both the project and its contents.

1. Share the Project

Log in as an FME Flow admin and go to Projects. Click Share next to the project and add the appropriate users or roles.

2. Share Project Contents

After sharing the project, manually share the following items as needed:

  • Automations
  • Topics

  • Apps

3. Verify Missing Permissions

Ask the user to open the project and check for any red exclamation icons. These indicate items that are still not accessible.

4. Update Remaining Permissions

Based on what the user reports as missing, update sharing settings for those specific items.

Additional Notes

  • Project-level sharing does not guarantee access to all items contained within it
  • This behavior is expected and designed to maintain granular permission control
