Question

How can I restore my translation log window / visual preview window in FME Workbench?

I can’t find (or I’ve lost) one of my window views in FME Workbench. These windows may be:
  • Navigator
  • Transformer Gallery
  • Translation Log
  • Parameter Editor
  • Feature Inspector
  • Visual Preview
  • History
  • Help
  • Overview
  • Feature Type Connections
  • Attribute Connections

Answer

In FME Workbench, from the top menu bar go to View > Windows and select the window that you are wanting to display. If it is already selected but you don't see the window in your view, it’s possible it may be on a second monitor or it’s missing.

To restore your FME Workbench window display to the default settings, follow the below steps for the version of FME you're using:

2022 and Newer

Use the Reset Window Layout option. This can be around in the menu bar of Workbench, go to View > Windows > Reset Window Layout.

Reset windows using the Reset Window Layout option in Workbench's View menu under the Windows option

2017 and Older

  1. Open the Windows Registry Editor, search for the application “regedit” (see Warning below )
  2. Navigate to:
    • For FME 2017 and newer: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Safe Software Inc.\FME Workbench\Window States\2017
    • For FME 2016 and prior: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Safe Software Inc.\FME Workbench\Window States
  3. Delete the following two keys: "Main Window Layout" and "Main Window Position"

If you’re able to consistently reproduce a lost window, please let our support team know and submit a case for us.

Warning :
Please note that improperly editing the Windows registry could result in your computer operating system being unusable. Use the Microsoft Registry Editor at your own risk and ensure that you have created a backup of your registry for your operating system prior to making changes. See the Microsoft article about "How to back up and restore the registry in Windows".
