Esri-Dependent Formats Unavailable When Using a Retired ArcGIS License

Consideration

In FME Form 2023.0, adding or editing Esri-dependent formats (such as Esri Geodatabase readers/writers) may produce this error:

The "Esri …" format has unmet dependencies. Please check that a supported version of ArcGIS is installed and licensed.

This can occur when adding a new Esri-dependent format to a workspace, or when opening a workspace authored in an older FME version and attempting to edit its Esri-dependent formats. Note that older workspaces will still run correctly in FME Form 2023.0; only editing is affected.

Why This Happens

Esri-dependent formats require access to a valid, licensed Esri product to function. If the only Esri license available to FME is for a retired or unsupported product version, all Esri-dependent formats will appear grayed out in the Reader/Writer Gallery and cannot be added to or edited.

How to Resolve It

Install and license an Esri ArcGIS product that is compatible with the FME 2023 platform. Refer to Notes on FME and Esri Versions and Compatibility on the FME Community for the full list of supported ArcGIS versions.

Starting in FME Form 2024.0, workspaces with dependencies on a valid Esri product license will not run when the only available Esri license comes from a retired version of an Esri product.
